According to IS 15418, wall coverings are categorized based on washability into washable, extra-washable, and scrubbable grades. IS 15418 standardizes symbols for both application methods and removal types in Table 1. Colour fastness to light as per IS 15418 is evaluated according to IS 2454, involving exposure to a Xenon arc lamp with indoor filters under controlled humidity (60-70%) and a black panel temperature not exceeding 45°C. Test samples must include all colours present in the wall covering pattern. The resulting colour change is rated numerically on a scale where a minimum rating of 3 is required to meet the standard. A rating below 3 indicates the product does not conform to colour fastness criteria, ensuring that wall coverings maintain adequate colour durability under typical indoor lighting.

To comply with IS 15418, manufacturers are required to mark rolls or their packaging with clearly visible information including the standard number (IS 15418), manufacturer or supplier identification, product description, pattern or batch number, and roll dimensions (width, length, and total area). Additionally, washability grade symbols (such as washable, extra-washable, scrubbable), colour fastness ratings, and application method symbols as specified in Table 1 must be displayed. These markings may appear on the roll, label, or accompanying documentation, and promotional materials must be consistent with this information to ensure transparency and conformity.
