According to the specified standard, fire blankets measuring 1.8 m by 1.8 m must be constructed primarily using asbestos-based components. The main body consists of asbestos cloth yarn compliant with the textile standard IS 13362, having a thickness of 1.6 mm. The loops are fashioned from asbestos tape or web, or alternatively cloth asbestos, also 1.6 mm thick as detailed in Annex A. Stitching utilizes asbestos sewing threads outlined in Annex B. The manufacturing process must observe safety precautions in line with relevant asbestos handling regulations to ensure durability and minimize exposure risks.

The fire blanket should have standard dimensions of 1.8 meters in length and width, with a tolerance of ±15 millimeters permitted for both measurements. The blanket's fabric consists of asbestos cloth yarn with a diameter of 1.6 mm, conforming to IS 13362. Loops made from asbestos tape or cloth must also maintain a thickness of 1.6 mm. Stitching density is specified between 16 and 20 stitches per decimeter, ensuring neatness and security. All manufacturing practices are to adhere to sound workmanship standards, free from defects, and subject to inspection protocols as per IS 7639.

The fire blanket is equipped with two loops, each 25 mm wide, constructed either from asbestos tape or by folding a 70 mm wide asbestos cloth cut along the warp direction. The folded strip is then secured with two rows of machine stitching to form a loop approximately 460 mm in length, with the overall strip length being 760 mm. These loops are sewn onto one side of the blanket, positioned 630 mm from each respective corner. The stitching throughout the blanket is executed with an even tension and density ranging from 16 to 20 stitches per decimeter, ensuring a secure and neat finish with all loose ends fastened properly.

Each fire blanket must bear clear and permanent markings including the product name, manufacturer’s identification, the year of production, and a pictorial warning symbol following the guidelines of IS 12081 (Parts 1 and 2). Optionally, compliant fire blankets can display the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) Certification Mark, indicating adherence to the standard and licensing under the BIS Act, 1986. These markings guarantee traceability, user safety awareness, and regulatory conformity.

The standard references several related codes emphasizing safety during asbestos handling. Workers must utilize appropriate personal protective equipment such as respirators, gloves, and protective garments as described in IS 12078:1987. Emission control of asbestos fibers is mandated through ventilation and dust suppression measures per IS 11770 (Part 3):1987. Regular cleaning routines using wet methods or HEPA-filtered vacuums are advised in IS 11767:1986. Safe disposal practices are outlined in IS 11768:1986 to prevent environmental contamination. Local exhaust ventilation systems are recommended by IS 12080:1987, and clear pictorial warning signs must be displayed according to IS 12081 (Parts 1 & 2). Adhering to these protocols ensures reduced exposure risk and maintains a safe working environment.
