According to IS 2395 Part 2:1994, indoor painting of fresh concrete surfaces requires specific primer and finishing coats depending on the desired finish: white wash and colour wash use one coat of respective wash followed by two finishing coats; dry distemper requires a clear primer or sizing, filler if needed, then two coats; oil-bound distemper mandates an alkali-resistant primer with filler as necessary before two finishing coats; emulsion paints and other finishes follow similar patterns with one coat primer, optional filler or undercoat, and two finishing coats. Surfaces should be dry and free from contaminants to ensure proper adhesion and durability.

Surfaces affected by algae or mould should be thoroughly cleaned using fungicidal solutions and allowed to dry completely before painting, as outlined in IS 2395 Part 1 clauses 5.6.2 and 5.6.3. For efflorescence, painting must be postponed until the efflorescence stops. The salts must be removed by dry brushing or washing, moisture sources corrected, and surfaces fully dried. Cracks and defects should be filled and feathered to ensure uniformity. These steps guarantee long-lasting paint adhesion and prevent premature paint failure.

IS 2395 Part 2 (1994) includes schedules for exterior masonry painting covering white wash, colour wash, emulsion paints, flat and semigloss paints, gloss paints, chemical resistant paints, cement paints, and bituminous paints. Each type requires specific primer, undercoat, and finishing coats, often referencing other IS standards such as IS 5411 for emulsions, IS 168 and IS 1232 for flat paints, IS 133 and IS 2932/2933 for gloss paints, and IS 9862 for bituminous paints. Proper surface dryness and use of alkali-resistant primers are emphasized to enhance durability.

For surfaces exhibiting blistering or cracking, IS 2395 Part 2 advises complete removal of loose and damaged paint, thorough cleaning of biological growth following Part 1 guidelines, and addressing any efflorescence by delaying painting or undertaking remedial measures. Cracks and blisters must be filled with appropriate fillers or caulking materials before priming. After priming, inspect and refill any newly exposed defects, ensuring the substrate is dry and compatible paints are used. This method ensures restoration of surface integrity and prolongs paint life.

IS 2395 Part 2 coordinates closely with numerous Indian Standards to provide comprehensive painting guidance. It references IS 2395 Part 1 for workmanship and operations, IS 3140 for asbestos cement products, and various paint-specific standards such as IS 133 for enamel paints, IS 427 and IS 428 for distempers, IS 5410 and IS 5411 for cement and emulsion paints, and IS 9862 for bituminous paints. This integration ensures primer, undercoat, and finishing applications are consistent with established norms, surface preparation is thorough, and maintenance protocols adhere to recognized quality standards.
